Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the size of the spill risk. There are several factors worth considering:
- Will spills be managed by a single kit or multiple kits throughout the facility?
- What is the largest spill possible (worst case scenario)?
- What is the most likely spill to occur? This can/will vary in different areas of the facility.
Generally, a spill kit should have sufficient absorption capacity for the largest spill possible that responders on-site are trained to handle.
This depends on the liquids that are likely to be spilled. Many Spilled control kits contain similar items, but there are various types available to provide de compatibility with spilled liquid. The absorbents, tools, PPE, and other equipment in any given kit should address the unique needs of the specific liquids that might be spilled.
The three most common types of spill kits are General Purpose, Oil Only and Chemical. A quick review of each type:
- General Purpose: Highly versatile absorbents are typically grey in color and are utilized in virtually every industry. All liquids, including water and oil-based liquids, will be absorbed by universal sorbents
- Chemical: They are yellow in color and have universal capabilities. They are also known as HazMat sorbent. The yellow color of the sorbent's alerts people to the presence of a hazardous chemical. They work best with unknown, hazardous, flammable, corrosive, and chemical substances.
- Oil-Only: The most common color for oil-only absorbent is white. They are hydrophobic and are commonly utilized for oils and hydrocarbons. Because they are hydrophobic, they do not absorb water and are perfect for absorbing oil from water in outdoor applications.
The standard contents in a spill kit varies according to the type of spill kits.
- General purpose spill kits. Contains a bag of Spillfix absorbents, general purpose boom, absorbent pads, contaminated waste bag, oil resistant gloves, disposable apron and instruction sheet.
- Chemical spill kits. Contains Hazchem absorbent boom, Hazchem absorbent pads, contaminated waste bag, neoprene gloves, disposable apron and instruction sheet.
- Oil-only spill kits.
Oil absorbent boom, absorbent pads, contaminated waste bag, oil resistant gloves, disposable apron and an instruction sheet.
Similar to fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and eyewash stations. Spill kits should be placed in areas where they are likely to be needed. They can be kept either indoors or outdoors. It is important to think about mobility when purchasing a kit for a large area. Because spills rarely happen right next to where a kit is, wheeled kits are extremely valuable in an emergency. Since there are numerous possibilities, it is vital to assess the qualities of a spill kit before incorporating them into your spill response plan.
